School Policies & Guidelines

Emergency Procedures:
Background:
Emergency procedures cover the areas of fire procedures, injury policies and supervision policies. The primary consideration in these instances is to act immediately, and to inform parents when it is safe to do so.
Procedures:
- Fire Procedures:
- Fire drills must be carried out on a basis in conformity with Calgary Fire Department rules. They must be documented.
- Fire exits must be posted in each room.
- In case of fire, students and staff are to line up quickly and quietly at the front or back entrance doors, depending on which room they were occupying, and thence to proceed together to the parking lot out back, or the sidewalk at the front of the building. At that time a count is taken of the population outside the building.
- In the case of a fire that destroys the school premises, students will proceed across 14th Street N. W. by the overpass and thence to the Hillhurst-Sunnyside Community Centre, from where parents would be contacted by phone. This community centre is open all day, and we would congregate in the foyer just inside the main entrance. The address there is 1118 Kensington Road N. W., and its telephone number is 283-0554.
- The Principal, or closest adult, shall remove the school register from the filing cabinet for the purpose of keeping parents' phone numbers. A second list of parents and contact numbers will be kept at the Banbury of one of the staff members, Mr. Rudy Dutka, Business Administrator.
- Two fire extinguishers are available, and their locations made known to the school population.
- Student Injury Policy:
- Injuries may be considered either minor or major. In the case of a minor injury, the student should be accompanied by a fellow student, if necessary, to the first available adult, who will then suggest a reasonable remedy.
- A first aid kit is available in the bottom drawer of the black cabinet in the main foyer, in the fanny pack that the Pre-school teacher takes out for the recess break, and in a locked locker. A cold compress and ice cubes are located in the freezer.
- In the case of a serious injury, in addition to the above procedures, the Principal, Vice Principal or Secretary is to be contacted, and if necessary, the student taken to the Children's Hospital Emergency Department. If an ambulance is required, the City of Calgary service will be used. The parents will be contacted with appropriate details. Alberta Health Care numbers are provided to the school on the enrolment registration form, for this purpose.
- Student Supervision Policy:
- All students are expected to remain on the school premises during school hours, unless they have notified the administration or staff and have received permission to do so.
- If a student leaves the school premises without permission, or without notification, the school policy is to phone their parent(s) and to phone the Police, if warranted.
- Recess breaks, lunch hours and field trips are supervised by staff, along with older students.
- While waiting for rides at the end of the day, students are expected to remain in the school until they are met by the person who is picking them up. For younger students, parents must notify the school if an unexpected person has been charged with picking up their child(ren).
